During the 2010 off-season, I began a new strength and conditioning program with Ben Shear. My goals were to get inside the Top 5 in the World Rankings and to win on both the European and PGA Tours. I am currently the #1 Ranked player in the World, I have 2 wins on the PGA Tour, 2 wins on the European Tour, along with 2 runner-up finishes, and 10 additional top-10 finishes. I was also the first player to win the money list on both the PGA Tour and the European Tour. I would say that we met my goals.
While I have worked with a variety of strength and conditioning experts during both amateur and professional careers, I have been pleased with Ben’s thorough approach, and his emphasis on relating fitness to mechanics and mechanics to performance. While Ben has only been a part of my performance team for this year, it is during this year that I have enjoyed my greatest success.
2011 #1 Player In The World
At the end of the 2010 PGA Tour season, my official World Golf ranking was 213th. I had always been successful throughout my golfing career, and I was not satisfied with this position. Deciding that major changes were necessary, I hired one of the best caddies on Tour, found a well-respected manual therapist, and began working with Ben Shear as my Strength and Conditioning Coach. I knew that 18 of the Top 20 Players in the world were working out specifically for their golf game, and I realized that I needed to as well.
Since I began my training, I have increased my driving distance by 11 yards, amassed 17 top-10 finishes, won three PGA Tour events, including the 2012 US Open, and my official World Golf ranking climbed from 213th to 5th. I couldn’t be happier with my decision to add these new pros to my team, and with their guidance and a lot of hard work, I have been playing the kind of golf that highlights my true capabilities.

Ben Shear has been an invaluable asset in my teaching of Luke Donald and Luke’s rise to #1 in the world. What separates Ben is the depth of his knowledge and education and his application of that expertise to golf. I haven’t found a subject as it applies to the body and the physiology or biomechanics of golf that Ben hasn’t helped me understand better. Ben is committed to continually improving and learning, and that commitment really shows up in his training. Most importantly, Ben is committed to utilizing workouts to help people shoot better scores. He constantly wants to know how Luke’s body is moving and how he needs to move to hit better shots. This makes it possible for me to help Luke continually improve his swing.
It is rare to have a fitness specialist who is so knowledgeable about the golf swing and who really understands how to improve people’s bodies to improve their swings. Ben doesn’t have his clients working out to look better – he has them working out as part of their overall plan to better golf.
For any golfer looking to improve their game, Ben Shear will help you achieve your goals!

My son, Hartej Gill, is a 15-year old golfer who competes in nationally-ranked tournaments. We were fortunate to find a good swing and short game coach, but we had not been able to find a physical trainer who knew how to help improve physical abilities specifically for golf. Recently, we made one of our best decisions: to train with Ben Shear. In a few weeks, my son started hitting the ball like never before. Working with Ben Shear in the off-season has increased my son’s consistency and power considerably. Ben’s knowledge and experience with PGA Tour Pros has made me trust each and every decision he makes about my son’s fitness and nutrition. I feel we are fortunate to get tour-level, golf-specific fitness instruction in our local area.

Ben Shear’s understanding of biomechanics, his ability to assess an individual’s strengths/weaknesses and his skill as a trainer—used together—are second to none. Ben has helped me, personally, improve my strength, mobility, stability, injury-prevention and efficiency of motion. Because of regular training with Ben, I play dramatically more consistent golf and compete at a much higher level. More importantly, he has helped me to improve as an instructor. Training with Ben and his team will truly help any dedicated golfer reach his or her potential.
